Task 2 Writing:Write an essay on the following topic:

"Urbanization is detrimental to the environment."

Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Provide reasons and relevant examples in support of your arguments.

Model Answer:

It is a widely debated issue whether urbanization is detrimental to the environment or not. In this essay, I will discuss both sides of the argument and provide evidence to support my stance on the matter.

On one hand, it can be argued that urbanization indeed has negative effects on the environment. The rapid expansion of cities leads to deforestation and habitat destruction, which disrupts ecosystems and endangers species survival. Additionally, urban areas produce high levels of air pollution due to an increase in vehicle usage, industrial activities, and energy consumption. Furthermore, the waste generated by cities contributes to environmental degradation, as proper waste management is often lacking in developing countries.

On the other hand, there are also some benefits that urbanization can bring to the environment. The concentration of people in urban areas allows for better public transportation systems, reducing individual vehicle usage and subsequently lowering air pollution levels. Additionally, cities can implement green initiatives such as creating parks, planting trees, and promoting recycling programs which contribute to a healthier ecosystem.

In conclusion, while urbanization has the potential to be detrimental to the environment due to habitat destruction, air pollution, and waste management issues, it can also provide benefits through improved public transportation systems and environmental initiatives. Ultimately, it is essential for urban planners to take sustainable development into account when designing cities in order to minimize negative impacts on the environment.
