One of the most evident impacts of wildlife trafficking on biodiversity is the extinction or near-extinction of certain animal species. For instance, the rhinoceros, elephant, and tiger have all become primary targets of poachers due to the high demand for their horns, tusks, and skins respectively. As a result, these species are now critically endangered with the possibility of extinction in the near future. The decline of these animals not only reduces biodiversity but also disrupts the ecosystem balance as they play crucial roles such as seed dispersal and maintaining vegetation growth.

Moreover, wildlife trafficking indirectly threatens biodiversity by causing a ripple effect on other species within the same habitat.
