On one hand, geoengineering has the potential to significantly reduce the effects of climate change by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere or reflecting sunlight back into space. For example, carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies could remove large quantities of CO2 from industrial emissions before they are released into the environment. Additionally, solar radiation management techniques, such as injecting particles into the stratosphere to reflect sunlight, could potentially lower global temperatures.
However, these benefits come with considerable risks and uncertainties. Geoengineering projects may have unforeseen consequences on Earth's climate system, leading to further imbalances in temperature and weather patterns.
