Task 2: In your own words, write an essay discussing whether society is becoming more or less divided along economic lines. Make sure you consider the various factors that may contribute to this division and provide relevant examples to support your argument.
Model Answer:
In recent years, there has been growing debate over whether society is becoming more or less divided along economic lines. On one hand, some argue that the gap between the rich and the poor has widened significantly due to various factors such as globalization, technological advancements, and changes in social values. On the other hand, others contend that advancements in education and social welfare policies have helped to reduce economic disparities and promote greater social cohesion.
One factor contributing to increased economic division is globalization. As countries become more interconnected through trade and investment, wealth tends to be concentrated among a small group of individuals who control the means of production. This has led to growing income inequality in many parts of the world, exacerbating social divisions. For example, in 2018, the richest 1% of people owned more than half of the world's wealth, while the bottom 50% of the global population possessed less than 1% (OXFAM, 2019). This stark disparity highlights the widening wealth gap in today's society.
Moreover, technological advancements have also played a role in exacerbating economic divisions. As automation and artificial intelligence become more prevalent, jobs that require low-skilled labor are increasingly being replaced by machines. Consequently, the demand for high-skilled workers has increased, leaving those without access to quality education or training opportunities struggling to find stable employment. This skill-based divide has resulted in a growing number of low-income earners who are unable to keep up with rising living costs and social mobility.
However, it is important to note that not all factors contributing to economic divisions have had a negative impact. For instance, advancements in education have made higher learning more accessible for individuals from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. This has enabled many people to improve their skills and secure better-paying jobs, helping to reduce the wealth gap to some extent. Additionally, social welfare policies such as minimum wage laws and unemployment benefits have provided financial support to those in need, thereby alleviating poverty and promoting greater social cohesion.
In conclusion, although it is evident that globalization and technological advancements have contributed to a widening economic divide, it cannot be overlooked that efforts made in education and welfare policies have also helped to mitigate these disparities. While the debate on whether society is becoming more or less divided along economic lines remains ongoing, it is crucial for governments, institutions, and individuals to continue working towards creating a more equitable and inclusive society.
