IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: Is the fashion industry sustainable in its current form?

Model Answer:
The fashion industry has experienced rapid growth in recent years, driven by increasing consumer demand for new clothes and trends. This expansion, however, raises concerns about the sustainability of the industry in its current form. In this essay, I will discuss both the environmental and social implications of the fashion industry's current practices and propose potential solutions to improve its sustainability.

From an environmental perspective, the fashion industry is one of the world's largest polluters. The production of clothing requires a significant amount of resources such as water, energy, and raw materials like cotton and synthetic fibres. Moreover, the industry generates vast amounts of waste in the form of discarded garments and packaging materials. These practices contribute to climate change, deforestation, and pollution of both air and water. For example, the production of synthetic fabrics releases microplastics into the ocean, which are harmful to marine life and can enter the food chain through ingestion by fish and other sea creatures.

Socially, the fashion industry has been criticised for exploiting workers in low-wage countries. Many garment factories employ underpaid workers in poor working conditions, leading to long hours, low wages, and limited access to healthcare or safe working environments. This exploitation is often justified by the demand for cheap clothing, which encourages fast fashion practices that prioritise profit over people.

To improve the sustainability of the fashion industry, several measures can be implemented. Firstly, companies should adopt more sustainable production methods such as using organic and recycled materials, reducing waste through efficient manufacturing processes, and minimising energy consumption in their operations. Secondly, consumers must become more aware of the environmental and social impacts of their clothing choices and opt for eco-friendly and ethically produced garments. Lastly, governments can introduce regulations and incentives to encourage sustainable practices within the fashion industry.

In conclusion, while the fashion industry has experienced significant growth in recent years, its current form raises serious sustainability concerns. By adopting more environmentally-friendly production methods, promoting ethical consumption, and implementing supportive regulations, it is possible for the fashion industry to become more sustainable and minimise its negative impact on both the environment and society.
