Task: Discuss whether ocean acidification is reversible or not, supported by relevant examples and arguments.
Model Answer:
Ocean acidification, a consequence of the increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, has raised concerns among scientists, environmentalists, and policymakers. This essay will analyze the possibility of reversing ocean acidification by considering its causes and potential solutions. While it is theoretically possible to reverse ocean acidification through mitigation strategies, it may not be completely reversible due to the long-lasting effects on marine ecosystems.
One of the primary causes of ocean acidification is the absorption of carbon dioxide by seawater, which forms carbonic acid and lowers the pH levels of the water. This process has led to a decrease in calcium carbonate availability, affecting organisms like mollusks and corals that rely on it for their shells and skeletons. The reduction in calcium carbonate and consequent damage to marine life can have long-lasting effects on food chains and ecosystems, making the complete reversal of ocean acidification challenging.
However, mitigation efforts such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting carbon capture and storage technologies, and preserving coastal ecosystems can help slow down the rate of ocean acidification. These measures, if implemented effectively, could prevent further damage to marine life and eventually lead to a partial recovery of affected species.
In conclusion, while it is theoretically possible to reverse ocean acidification through mitigation strategies, the long-lasting effects on marine ecosystems and the complexity of the process make it unlikely to be completely reversible. Therefore, addressing the root cause of ocean acidification – greenhouse gas emissions – should be a top priority for global environmental policies.
Score: For this response, a
Band Score of
9 can be awarded as it presents a clear and detailed argument supported by relevant examples and addresses both sides of the topic effectively. The essay is well-structured, with an introduction, body, and conclusion that are coherent and logical.
