While these financial instruments have enabled many students to access tertiary education that they might not otherwise have been able to afford, their widespread use also carries several potential drawbacks.

On the one hand, student loans can be viewed as a crucial catalyst for social mobility. They allow individuals from lower-income backgrounds to pursue higher education, which in turn opens up opportunities for career advancement and financial stability. As such, student loans can contribute to a more equitable society by reducing the socioeconomic barriers that have traditionally hindered access to tertiary education.

However, the increasing reliance on student loans may also exacerbate existing social disparities. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds are often more likely to take out large loans and struggle with repayment due to lower-paying jobs or unforeseen financial hardships. Consequently, these students may find themselves mired in debt for an extended period, which can lead to long-term financial distress.

Furthermore, the rising cost of education fuelled by student loans has prompted concerns about the value and relevance of degrees. With the burden of debt looming over recent graduates, there is growing scrutiny around whether the high costs associated with tertiary education are justified. Critics argue that universities should reassess their fee structures to ensure that students receive a quality education without being saddled with crippling levels of debt.

In conclusion, while student loans have undoubtedly expanded access to higher education and facilitated social mobility, they also pose significant challenges for both students and the broader society. Policymakers and educational institutions must strike a balance between ensuring that all individuals can attend university and safeguarding against the potential pitfalls of debt accumulation.
