In particular, it has raised concerns regarding whether technology is widening or closing the digital divide – the gap between individuals, groups, or communities with regard to access to, use of, and skills in relation to information and communication technologies (ICTs). This essay will analyze both sides of this debate and present a conclusion.

On one hand, proponents of the argument that technology is narrowing the digital divide point to the increasing availability and affordability of digital devices. With the rise of smartphones, tablets, and low-cost laptops, even individuals from lower-income backgrounds can now access these devices. Moreover, the expansion of internet connectivity through 4G networks and affordable broadband services has made it easier for more people to access the internet. Additionally, various government initiatives, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and private companies have been working towards providing digital literacy training programs to bridge the skills gap among different socioeconomic groups.

On the other hand, critics of this view argue that technology is actually exacerbating the digital divide. They contend that the high cost of advanced technology, such as virtual reality headsets and cutting-edge software, is out of reach for many people. Furthermore, the digital divide persists in terms of digital skills – while some individuals have acquired advanced technical skills, others may not possess the necessary knowledge to fully utilize new technologies effectively. Additionally, the rapid pace of technological change has left behind those who cannot keep up with these advancements.

In conclusion, it is evident that both sides of the argument have valid points. While technology has undoubtedly made strides in terms of accessibility and affordability, there remains a significant divide in digital skills and knowledge. Efforts must be focused on not only increasing the availability of devices but also providing comprehensive digital literacy training for all members of society to ensure that no one is left behind in this rapidly changing technological landscape.
